While owning and operating Bear Creek Dairy, the Boelens never shy away from connecting with local community members. Their dedication to fostering strong relationships with those around them is evident in every aspect of their work. As a multi-generational operation now based in Brooklyn, Iowa, but originally located in the Netherlands, Bear Creek Dairy has around 1,700 cows and has become a cornerstone of their local agricultural community. They hope to add around 300 more to their herd this upcoming year demonstrating their ongoing commitment to growth and excellence in the dairy industry.

Being the only dairy operation in their home county, the Boelens felt the need to do more for the community during the COVID-19 pandemic by showcasing the dairy industry through a “Dairy Drive-Thru.” This innovative approach was a creative solution to maintain community engagement and allowed them to share their passion for dairy with a broader audience during a challenging time. With the help of their family and all their employees, which in total is less than 20 people, the dairy drive-thru featured milk from a distributor and fresh-baked cookies from one of the family members who happens to be a pastry chef. The drive-thru served as an educational experience and a reminder of the importance of supporting local businesses during difficult times. The event not only provided much-needed relief from the cabin fever of quarantine but also proved the importance of the dairy industry. This experience allowed those from the community to come on-farm and do a self-guided tour to see what a dairy operation looks like, how it works, and enjoy a tasty treat. Such hands-on experiences are invaluable in fostering a deeper understanding and appreciation of where food comes from. The positive response from the community has encouraged the Boelen family to continue this tradition, as they are now in their fourth year hosting this event. They hope this event will continue to grow and become a cherished tradition within the community for many years to come.

To applaud them for the efforts they take in connecting with the community, Bear Creek Dairy was awarded the Wergin Good Farm Neighbor award in May of 2024. This prestigious recognition highlights the impact they have made both within their industry and their local area. The Wergin Good Farm Neighbor Award, made possible by the Coalition to Support Iowa’s Farmers, recognizes Iowa livestock farmers who have a family-owned operation, are active in the community, produce livestock or poultry to the highest animal care standards, and are dedicated to conservation and environmental stewardship. The award is named in memory of Gary Wergin, a long-time WHO Radio farm broadcaster who helped create the award. Receiving this award is a significant honor, reflecting the Boelen family’s unwavering dedication to these core values. Through their commitment to excellence and community, Bear Creek Dairy continues to set an example for other farmers across the state.
